Universal Design for Learning (UDL)


According to the Center for Applied Special Technology (CAST), classrooms today are composed of a diverse group of students. CAST has worked to develop and enhance technology-based classroom equipment and strategies according to their definition of Universal Design for Learning (UDL). Their definition of a Universal Design for Learning requires:
  • That students are given a variety of representative tools-- so that students have multiple ways of understanding the information presented in order to gain knowledge from that experience/lesson
  • That students are shown or taught several different means of expression--this provides the students with alternative methods for expressing, proving, or demonstrating what they have learned
  • That students are provided with a means of engagement, which increases their motivation in that area of learning

With UDL, teachers are encouraged to use the power of technology to create an inclusive classroom, and an effective teaching environment for everyone .
Proven research states that all brains perform functions differently. However, CAST has focused on 3 important brain networks that influence learning. These networks are:
  • Recognition networks (Obtaining facts, how the brain identifies what is seen, heard, or read--"the what of learning")
  • Strategic networks (Performing functions, how the brain organizes and expresses ideas--"the how of learning")
  • Affective networks (Engagement and motivation, how a student is interested or challenged--"the why of learning")
